How contrast and ROI work

100 × Σ|with target − background| / Σ(|with target| + |background|). Zero if both vanish. This is response contrast, not detection probability or a noise-based ranking. AEM uses the displayed gate. Base ROI is (contrast / 100) × priced gross deposit value / survey cost. Adjusted ROI multiplies that by a detectability planning weight: 0% below 1% contrast or at signal/noise ≤1×, rising linearly to 100% at 3× signal/noise. Unknown noise leaves ROI unranked. This weight is not a calibrated probability of discovery; the comparison excludes recovery and mining costs. Over a painted section, “background” is the same painting with every lithology ticked as a target replaced by the host rock, so the contrast is what the orebody adds rather than what all of the geology adds to a halfspace. Every method that has returned a response keeps its ROI — one since switched off, or one whose model has been edited since, included — and those rows are marked out of date.
